Erasmus Reinhold

Erasmus Reinhold (22 octobre 151119 février 1553) était un astronome et mathématicien allemand. Il naquit et mourut à Saalfeld, Thuringe, Allemagne.

Il suivit des cours à l'université de Wittenberg, où il fut nommé doyen puis recteur. En 1536, il fut nommé professeur de hautes mathématiques par Philippe Melanchthon. Contrairement à la définition moderne, plutôt restreinte, les "mathématiques" comprenaient à l'époque les mathématiques appliquées aussi bien que l'astronomie. Son collègue, Georg Joachim Rheticus, étudia également à Wittenberg, et fut nommé, en 1536, professeur de basses mathématiques.

Reinhold référença un nombre important d'étoiles. Ses publications en astronomie comprenaient un commentaire sur la Theoricae novae planetarum (Théorie sur les nouvelles planètes) de Georg von Purbach.

Le duc Albert de Brandebourg soutint financièrement Reinhold notamment dans l'impression de ses Tables Pruténiques (« Prussiennes ») en 1551. Ces cartes astronomiques aidèrent à répandre les méthodes de calcul de Copernic à travers l'Empire. Les Tables Pruténiques de Reinhold et les travaux de Copernic furent cruciales dans la réforme du calendrier par le Pape Grégoire III, en 1582. Cependant, Reinhold (comme d'autres astronomes avant Kepler et Galilée) appliquèrent les méthodes mathématiques de Copernic dans un système géocentrique, rejetant la cosmologie héliocentrique d'un point de vue autant physique que théologique[1].

Reinhold était un membre du Cercle de Melanchthon, un groupe de mathématiciens luthériens autour de Melanchton, qui étaient généralement partisans des théories coperniciennes.
