Le FBX est un format créé par Kaydara lors du développement du logiciel d'animation 3D FilmBox (dont l'extension du format de fichier en est l'acronyme). La solution FilmBox a ensuite été acquise par Alias qui l'a rebaptisé MotionBuilder et y a ajouté, entre autres, la possibilité de transférer des animations depuis et vers Maya. Suite au rachat d'Alias par Autodesk, MotionBuilder s'est vu ajouter la possibilité de transférer des animations, entre autres, de Maya et 3D Studio Max.
