Contrairement au dispositif actuellement en vigueur dans la zone euro, les importantes réserves obligatoires que les banques américaines et autres institutions de crédit doivent constituer auprès de la banque centrale, la Réserve fédérale des États-Unis, ne sont pas rémunérées.

Il en a résulté un marché secondaire au jour-le-jour des réserves non utilisées, dit marché des Federal Funds, ou Fed Funds, qui forme le marché directeur des taux à très court terme du marché monétaire domestique américain.
