file (Unix)

file est une commande UNIX qui permet de déterminer le type d'un fichier.

Pour chaque fichier valide passé en paramètre, file tente de déterminer le type de données qu'il contient et affiche cette information et éventuellement d'autres informations comme les dimensions pour une image ou les codecs.

Exemples :

$> file apropos.1.gz 
 apropos.1.gz: gzip compressed data, from Unix, max compression
$> file 64x64x32.png 
 64x64x32.png: PNG image, 64 x 64, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
$> file le_voyage_dans_la_lune.mp4 
 le_voyage_dans_la_lune_edit_1.mp4: ISO Media, MPEG v4 system, version 1
