Premières nations
Premières nations ou Premières Nations est le terme utilisé seulement par les populations autochtones canadiennes pour désigner les peuples premiers en Amérique du Nord (couramment appelés « Amérindiens »)
Ces peuples choisissent généralement l'appellation de « peuple autochtone » ou d'« Autochtones » qui est aussi celle utilisée dans l'article 35 de la Loi constitutionnelle de 1982 et désigne les Indiens, les Inuits et les Métis du Canada.
En 1980, le Conseil mixte de l'Assemblée des Premières Nations utilise le terme « Premières nations » dans sa Déclaration des Premières nations. Mais cette expression fait référence aux Amérindiens excluant les Inuits et les Métis.
Pour les peuples autochtones, le terme de « Premières nations » est dans sa forme symbolique une revendication vers l'autonomie ou l'autodétermination, mais aussi vers un statut de « premiers parmi des égaux »[1]. Les Autochtones se considèrent donc égaux aux Anglais et aux Français qui sont urs » et peuvent par la suite revendiquer des territoires[2] ou obliger les gouvernements provinciaux ou fédéral à obtenir leur consentement pour certains projets comme les barrages hydro-électriques, les exploitations de mines et autres.
