Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach est un architecte et sculpteur autrichien. Il est né à Graz le 20 juillet 1656 et est mort le 5 avril 1723 à Vienne. Il est considéré comme l'un des créateurs du style architectural baroque tardif allemand.

Il naît le 20 juillet 1656 à Graz sous le nom de Johann Bernhard Fischer.

Il suivit des études de sculpture, son père étant lui-même sculpteur, puis à partir de 1674, séjourne à Rome où il se forme à l'architecture dans l'atelier de Carlo Fontana. Il y rencontre Bernin et prend connaissance des œuvres de Francesco Borromini et Guarino Guarini. Il est de retour à Vienne en 1686 après le siège par les troupes ottomanes en 1683. À ce moment-là, la capitale autrichienne est délivrée de la menace qui pesait sur elle depuis des années et Fischer von Erlach peut doter la ville d'édifices prestigieux. Il tiendra le poste de sculpteur de la cour impérial jusqu'en 1689 où il devient professeur d'architecture du futur héritier du trône Joseph Ier. Il sera anobli par l'empereur Léopold en 1705, qui lui octroie le titre de Erster Hofbaumeister (premier architecte de la Cour), et lui donne sa particule : Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach.

Il réalisera ses plus grands chefs-d'œuvre à partir de 1715 dont l'Église Saint-Charles-Borromée et le château de Schönbrunn à Vienne.

Son fils, Joseph Emanuel, poursuivit son œuvre après sa mort.

Fischer von Erlach, considéré comme l'un des plus grands architectes autrichiens, a tenté une synthèse d'éléments divers provenant des différentes périodes du baroque. Cela donne à ses bâtiments une originalité qui plut à la Cour de Vienne, ville qui conserve encore aujourd'hui de magnifiques œuvres de Fischer von Erlach et de son fils.
