Al Jolson (né Asa Yoelson le 26 mai 1886 à Srednik en Lituanie intégrée alors à l'Empire russe, décédé le 23 octobre 1950 à San Francisco (Californie) est un chanteur et un acteur dont la carrière a duré de 1911 jusqu'à sa mort en 1950. Il a été l'un des plus populaires artistes de music hall du XXe siècle aux États-Unis et son influence a touché de grands noms du jazz comme Bing Crosby ou Eddie Fisher.

Il fut la première voix humaine entendue dans le premier film parlant, Le Chanteur de jazz (1927).

Biographie

Al Jolson, Asa Yoelson de son vrai prénom, est né dans la ville de Srednik, gouvernement de Kovensk (auj.Seredžius en Lituanie) de parents juifs, Moshe Reuben Yoelson et Naomi Ettas Cantor. Ils émigrèrent vers les États-Unis. Son premier nom originel, vraisemblablement muté par les services d'immigration, était Hesselson. Son père fut chantre (hazan) et accessoirement l'un des circonciseurs (mohel) de la communauté Talmud Torah (actuellement Ohev Sholom Talmud Torah) de Washington, D.C..

Jolson devint chanteur populaire à New York dès 1898 : son frère et lui divertissaient les troupes américaines durant le conflit opposant l'Espagne aux les États-Unis (1898). Il a petit à petit développé les éléments clés de sa prestation artistique : maquillage du visage en noir, gestuelle exubérante, style de chanson, airs sifflés, et contact direct avec son public.

En 1911, il change son image artistique au théâtre de Broadway, dans la pièce La Belle Paree, prenant une apparence de star. Il commença à enregistrer et devint vite connu sur la scène internationale par son extraordinaire présence scénique et son rapport personnel avec les spectateurs. Aucun autre artiste n'a connu à Broadway autant de popularité et une carrière aussi longue (de 1911 à 1940). Les hurlements ou les supplications des spectateurs empêchaient souvent le spectacle de continuer, tant était puissante la présence de Al Jolson. Lors d'un spectacle à Boston, le show a dû être arrêté pendant 45 minutes. On disait de lui qu'il avait une personnalité électrique, liée à son habilité à faire penser à chaque spectateur qu'il chantait uniquement pour elle ou lui.

Cependant, il est plus connu ayant été la première voix humaine entendu dans le premier film parlant, Le Chanteur de jazz (1927) ((en) The Jazz Singer). Dans ce film, Al Jolson interpréta la chanson Mammy avec son visage maquillé en noir.

Quand il a signé à la Warners pour une série de films parlants, Al Jolson a joué dans Le Fou chantant ((en) The Singing Fool) en 1928 — un film dramatique, histoire dans laquelle un artiste voulait continuer ses spectacles en dépit du décès de son fils — et la chanson triste de ce film Sonny Boy, devint le premier disque américain à se vendre à 3 millions d'exemplaires.

Parmi les nombreuses chansons très populaires, on peut citer You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want to Do It), "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody", Swanee (écrit par George Gershwin), April Showers, Toot, Toot, Tootsie, Goodbye, California, Here I Come, When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob-Bob-Bobbin' Along, Sonny Boy, et Avalon.

Al Jolson a été le premier artiste à vendre plus de 10 millions de disques. Alors qu'il n'existait pas encore de hit-parade, Joel Whitburn (son archiviste) a fait un travail statistique sur les N° 1 des chansons de la période 1890-1954. Son estimation a été que des chansons de Al Jolson ont été 23 fois N° 1. Whitburn a calculé que Al Jolson aurait été en tête pendant 114 semaines.

Vie maritale

Al Jolson fut marié avec la danseuse Henrietta Keller de 1907 a 1918. En 1922, il prit pour épouse l'actrice de Broadway Ethel Delmar, leur union dura jusqu'en 1928. En 1928, il se maria avec la chanteuse, danseuse, et actrice Ruby Keeler, ils adoptèrent un garçon Al Jolson Jr en 1935, ils divorcèrent en 1939. En 1945 Erle Galbraith devint sa quatrième épouse jusqu'à son décès en 1950; ils adoptèrent deux filles Asa en 1948 et Alicia en 1949. Par la suite, Alicia eut un garçon, Louis-Thomas Hudon, en 1968. Al Jolson devint donc un grand-père mais ce fut de courte durée car celui-ci se suicida à l'aide d'un fusil calibre 12 à l'âge de 16 ans.

Radio et télévision

Après avoir quitté la scène de Broadway, Al Jolson est devenu une vedette de la radio. ‘’The Al Jolson Show’’ s’est déroulé de 1933 à 1939, de 1942 à 1943 et de 1947 à 1949. Ses émissions étaient toujours parmi les plus écoutées. En 1950, Al Jolson signe avec CBS Télévision, mais meurt en octobre de cette même année avant d’avoir commencé des émissions télévisées.
