Le Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) ou Système d'Information des Noms Géographiques, indexe plus de deux millions de références physiques et culturelles à travers les États-Unis et ses dépendances territoriales.
Le GNIS fut élaboré par l'United States Geological Survey ou (Institut de surveillance géologique des États-Unis) qui est un organisme gouvernemental américain se consacrant aux sciences de la Terre et collaboration avec l'United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN), (Bureau des États-Unis pour le nommage géographique), qui est un organisme du gouvernement fédéral des États-Unis dont le but est d'établir et de maintenir un usage uniforme des noms géographiques dépendant de l'autorité du gouvernement américain.
Participe également à ces travaux, le Bureau du recensement des États-Unis qui définit les localités désignées qui sont un sous-ensemble de lieux dans la base de données des noms enregistrés au "National Geographic".
La circulaire "Publication 28" de 1997 de l'United States Postal Service (Services postaux américains), institut une standardisation des adresses aux États-Unis (Toponymies, noms des rues, abréviations, etc.).
le GNIS étudie toute proposition de changement de nom toponymique des lieux. Justificatifs et mouvements associatifs sont sollicités.
