George Medal |
La Croix de Georges (George Cross) a été créée par le roi britannique George VI le 24 septembre 1940, afin de pouvoir récompenser les actes de courage et de bravoure des civils.
Elle reste un des plus grands honneurs pour les civils, tout comme la croix de Victoria pour les militaires.
En 1971, les médailles d'or Albert et Edward furent fusionnées avec la croix.
Récipiendaires
En 2008, 159 croix ont été décernées dont 86 à titre posthume. Deux distinctions ont été à titre collectif :
Les premières croix furent décernées le 30 septembre 1940 au lieutenant Robert Davies et au sappeur George Cameron Wylie pour avoir désamorcé une bombe qui menaçait de détruire la cathédrale Saint-Paul de Londres ainsi qu'à Thomas Alderson pour avoir sauvé deux chevaux d'un incendie.
