Après avoir étudié avec Filippo Gherardi auprès de Pietro Paolini à Lucques, Coli a été très actif à Venise et à Rome, où il devint un membre de l'atelier de Pietro da Cortona.
Il travailla ensuite exclusivement avec Gherardi.
