Le virus grippal aviaire H5N1 est un des virus dont une forme hautement pathogènes susceptibles de causer une pandémie humaine, qui a notamment provoqué une épidémie en 1999 chez les poulets en Italie (plus de 12 millions de volailles mortes, pour un coût de 200 M€ au moins).

Vaccin

  • Mercredi 19 septembre 2006 ; Sanofi Pasteur (branche vaccins de Sanofi-Aventis) entame ses tests de vaccin H5N1 sur l’homme. Le vaccin a été produit en France par Sanofi pasteur à Marcy l'Etoile. Il est testé à Bergen, en Norvège (1er essai clinique de phase I ) à l'hôpital universitaire Haukeland de l'Université de Bergen (Norvège) sur 60 adultes en bonne santé, de 20 à 40 ans.
