Alexandre Gordon Laing né à Édimbourg le 27 décembre 1793. Voyageur anglais, parti pour la Sierra-Leone, comme aide de camp du gouverneur MacCarthy[1]. Laing exécuta (1822) par son ordre un voyage dans l'intérieur, dont la relation, parue sous le titre de « Travels in the Timannee, Kooranko and Soolima Countries, in Western Africa », contient les premiers renseignements exacts sur les sources du Niger. Chargé, en 1825, d'une nouvelle expédition, il atteignit Tombouctou le 18 août 1826, mais fut étranglé par ordre d'un cheik fanatique le 28 septembre 1826.
La maison de Gordon Laing, située dans le quartier de Djingareiber à Tombouctou, à l’intérieur de la vieille ville, est classée patrimoine national par décret du 18 décembre 1992.
