Le département de la Sécurité intérieure des États-Unis (United States Department of Homeland Security) est un département de l'administration fédérale américaine créé en novembre 2002 à l'initiative du président George W. Bush, en réponse aux attentats du 11 septembre 2001. Son objectif est d'organiser et d'assurer la sécurité intérieure du pays.

Description

Combinant 22 agences fédérales liées à la sécurité du pays, notamment les US Coast Guard, les douanes, le Secret Service, les gardes frontières, l'Agence fédérale des situations d'urgence ou encore l'administration de sécurité du transport, il compte plus de 170 000 employés pour un budget de 30 milliards de dollars US en 2004.

Ce département bénéficie également du soutien des agences de la Communauté du renseignement (CIA et NSA), ainsi que du FBI .

La troisième et actuelle Secrétaire à la Sécurité intérieure est Janet Napolitano depuis le 20 janvier 2009. Le premier fut Tom Ridge, remplacé par Michael Chertoff le 1er février 2005.

Chargé entre autres du contre-espionnage au sein du territoire américain, il est autorisé par la loi votée lors de sa création à suivre les opérations d'achats par cartes de crédit, les données médicales, les déplacements, les abonnements à des magazines et l'utilisation d'Internet ou des messages électroniques. L'ensemble de ces informations est alors rassemblé au sein d'une base de données centrale recensant des informations sur tous les citoyens américains, gérée dans le cadre d'un programme pour «la maîtrise totale de l'information» [réf. nécessaire], concrétisation de la loi dite USA PATRIOT Act.
