Un Impi est un vocable zoulou qui désigne une troupe d'hommes armés. En occident le mot est souvent utilisé comme synonyme d'armée zouloue ou de régiment (ibutho en zoulou). Les premiers impis sont formés par le roi zoulou Shaka, alors qu'il n'était encore que le fils illégitime et exilé du roi Senzangakona mais qu'il déjà avait montré des compétences indéniables comme général dans l'armée du roi Mthethwa Dingiswayo, lors de la guerre Mthethwa-Ndwandwe au début des années 1810
Les premières années dans les impis
Les guerriers des impis sont recrutés dès l'âge de six ans! Ces très jeunes enfants sont incorporés dans l'armée comme porteurs (udibi), et sont enrôlés dans des unités de tranches d'âge identiques (intanga). Lors des campagnes, et jusqu'à ce qu'ils deviennent des buta, les garçons zoulous accompagnent leurs pères et leurs frères et leur servent de domestiques. Après, ils deviennent ikhanda puis kleza (ce qui signifie littéralement: boire directement de la mamelle), et enfin inkwebane, ou cadets. Tout leur temps est consacré à l'entraînement jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient officiellement enrôlés par le roi. Ils se défient mutuellement à des duels aux bâtons, qui doivent impérativement être relevés sous peine de déshonneur.
