L'inflammabilité est la capacité d'un matériau à s'enflammer plus ou moins facilement au contact d'une flamme, d'une étincelle ou bien d'une température élevée. Par exemple, l'Éther, le méthanol, et le soufre sont des produits chimiques très inflammables.

Ambiguïté linguistique

Le terme inflammable provient du verbe latin inflammare qui signifie « allumer, incendier ». Par suite, il s'est transformé en inflammer en moyen français, puis est devenu enflammer. Le terme inflammable est donc construit sur l'ancienne forme du verbe (inflammer + suffixe -able, de façon similaire au latin médiéval inflammabilis). L'adjectif antonyme est ininflammable (construit à l'aide du préfixe in- + inflammable). Dans les autres langues romanes, les termes équivalent sont similaires :

En anglais, le mot inflammable était anciennement un mot transparent, mais il a été remplacé par le terme flammable (construit sur le latin flammare "prendre feu" + -able de façon similaire à l'adjectif flammabilis) et le terme oppposé est devenu inflammable (à partir du préfixe latin in- exprimant la négation) et devenant ainsi un faux-ami signifiant ininflammable. Pour éviter cette ambiguïté, certains préfèrent ne pas employer le terme inflammable (c'est notamment le cas pour les messages d'avertissement) qui peut donc être interprété comme "peut prendre feu" et son contraire! En particulier aux États-Unis et au Royaume-Uni, c'est le terme flammable qui est toujours indiqué sur les camions transportant le carburant. En revanche, il est possible en Inde de rencontre la mention "highly inflammable" (hautement inflammable) et en Afrique c'est le terme inflammable qui est inscrit sur les camions transportant le pétrole.
