Sir Isaac Pitman (4 janvier 1813 - 22 janvier 1897), inventeur britannique, est l'auteur de la méthode de sténographie Pitman.
Biographie
Isaac Pitmann a d'abord utilisé durant 7 années la méthode Taylor avant d'élaborer sa propre méthode. Il a développé le système le plus largement répandu de la sténographie, connu maintenant comme la méthode Pitman. Il a proposé la première fois ceci dans Stenographic Soundhand en 1837. Cette méthode est principalement utilisée au Royaume-Uni et en Amérique du Nord.
Suite à l'invention du timbre en Angleterre, il crée les cours par correspondance, en 1840, à Londres, pour enseigner à distance sa méthode de sténographie. c'est le premier cours par correspondance au monde.
Pitman était un professeur qualifié et a enseigné dans une école privée qu'il a fondée à Wotton-under-Edge dans le Gloucestershire. Il était le grand-père de Sir James Isaac, connu pour avoir développé l'alphabet d'enseignement initial.
Il était le vice-président de la Vegetarian Society (société de promotion du végétarisme). Il est né à Trowbridge, dans le Wiltshire.
