Notes et anecdotes

A l'instar de Five miles out et Crises, Islands est composé d'une face A occupée par un seul morceau instrumental (The Wind Chimes), et d'une face B constituée de chansons.

The Wind Chimes se distingue par des sonorités venant surtout de l'Asie et de l'Océan Indien, certainement découvertes par Oldfield lors de l'écriture de The Killing Fields. Et, plus encore que Crises, le morceau comporte des micro-séquences qui préfigurent Amarok.

C'est la première fois qu'Oldfield fait appel à autant de chanteurs pour un seul album; ainsi, on constate la présence de Bonnie Tyler, mais aussi celle de Max Bacon, Anita Hegerland (alors la femme d'Oldfield), et surtout celle de Kevin Ayers, le chanteur qui l'avait intégré dans le Whole World, avant même la composition de Tubular Bells.

When the night's on fire est en réalité un bonus CD de l'album, c'est-à-dire qu'elle n'apparait pas sur le vinyle d'origine.

La chanson Magic Touch existe en deux versions : celle chantée par Jim Price sur l'édition européenne, et une autre chantée par Max Bacon sur l'édition américaine .

Notons qu'aucun single extrait de l'album ne rencontrera de vrai succès.
