Issachar (en hébreu : יִשָּׂשׁכָר, « homme de récompense ») est le neuvième fils de Jacob et le cinquième des sept enfants que Léa eut à Paddam-Aram. Il est le cinquième des douze fils de Jacob et Léa dans le récit de la Genèse. Léa voyait en ce fils la récompense que lui donnait Yahvé parce qu'elle avait permis à une servante d'enfanter des fils à son mari à une époque où elle était elle-même provisoirement stérile : Et Léa dit: Dieu m’a donné mon salaire (שְׂכָרִי, SKRY, Sekari), parce que j’ai donné ma servante à mon mari. Et elle appela son nom Issacar (יִשָּׂשכָר, YSSKR, Yisaskar)[1]. Il est possible que ce nom, "homme du salaire" soit à l'origine du surnom "Iscariote" donné à Judas Iscariote.
Dans la bénédiction de Jacob mourant à ses fils, Issachar est associé à l'âne. Vu la mauvaise réputation de celui-ci en Occident, celui-ci est en général remplacé par l'ours. On peut se demander si la proximité des termes arabes dubb : "ours" et dabb : "bête de somme, âne" y est pour quelque chose.
