Ithamar (nom saxon inconnu) fut le premier évêque d'Angleterre d'origine saxonne. Il fut également le premier évêque saxon de Rochester.

Biographie

Il fut consacré par Honorius et est qualifié par Bède comme étant :

« de la nation du Kent, mais non inférieur à ses prédécesseur [épiscopaux] dans son apprentissage et la conduite de sa vie[1]. »

Après sa consécration en 644[2], il prit un nouveau nom, Ithamar, un des fils d'Aaron dans l'Ancien Testament. Cette pratique de prendre un nouveau nom issu de l'Ancien Testament n'existait pas dans la tradition grégorienne de l'Église romaine, mais était courante dans l'Église celtique[3].

Il consacra Deusdedit premier archevêque anglo-saxon de Cantorbéry le 26 mars 655[4].

Il mourut entre le 26 mars 655 et 664[2], probablement vers 656, à Rochester[5]. Après sa mort, il fut canonisé et obtint un sanctuaire à la cathédrale de Rochester. Il est fêté le 10 juin[5].
