James Ingram Merrill (3 mars 1926 à New York - 6 février 1995), est un important poète américain, et fils d'un grand financier. Il a remporté de nombreux prix littéraires, dont un Prix Pulitzer en 1977 pour son livre Divine Comedies. The Changing Light at Sandover (1982) lui vaut également une récompense remise par le National Book Critics Circle en 1983. La Bibliothèque du Congrès lui décerne également une récompense, en 1990, pour The Inner Room.
