Jan Vansina

Jan Vansina (Anvers, Belgique, 14 septembre 1929) est un historien et un anthropologue spécialiste de l'Afrique. Il a été dans un premier temps medieviste et ethnographe mais il est surtout connu pour ses études sur histoire de l'Afrique précoloniale. II est considéré comme l'un des grands spécialistes de l'histoire des peuples d'Afrique centrale, sujet sur lequel il a beaucoup publié. De façon plus générale, on lui est redevable de réflexions aujourd'hui classiques sur l'évaluation de la validité des sources orales en matière d'histoire.

Vansina a obtenu un doctorat d'histoire à l'Université catholique de Louvain en 1957. Il est aujourd'hui professeur à l'Université du Wisconsin-Madison et vit à Madison, WI. Il a assisté Alex Haley (l'auteur du roman "Roots: The Saga of an American Family") à défricher bon nombre de mots africains qui ont été rapportés par les ancêtres d'Alex, et à déterminer leur origine mandingue.

Surement par coïncidence, Robert Ludlum publia en 2000 un roman d'espionnage appelé La Trahison Prométhée, dont l'un des personnages s'appelle Jan Vansina.
