Joe Henderson, né Joseph Henderson le 24 avril 1937 et décédé le 30 juin 2001, est un saxophoniste ténor et compositeur de jazz américain.

Biographie

Joe Henderson est né à Lima dans l'Ohio dans une famille de 15 enfants (5 sœurs et 9 frères). Il découvre le jazz grâce aux enregistrements des Jazz at the Philharmonic appartenant à l'un de ses frères. Encouragé par ses parents et par son frère, il commence à pratiquer la batterie, puis le saxophone ténor à 13 ans en étudiant le répertoire de Lester Young. Très vite, il compose pour l'orchestre de son lycée et se produit dans des clubs locaux.

Plus tard, Henderson étudie la musique au collège d'État du Kentucky (Kentucky State College) puis à l’université Wayne de Détroit (Wayne University) à l’âge de 18 ans. Il devient actif sur la scène jazz de cette ville, et participe à des jam sessions en compagnie des stars new-yorkaises de passage. Ces opportunités l’encouragent à apprendre la flûte et la basse, et surtout à développer ses compétences pour le saxophone et la composition. Ses camarades de classe, parmi lesquels on peut citer Yusef Lateef, Barry Harris, ou Donald Byrd, lui apportent certainement d’autres sources d’inspiration.

Après son service militaire (de 1960 à 1962), il s’installe à New York où il est pris en main par le trompettiste Kenny Dorham. De 1963 à 1968, il enregistre en sideman sur une trentaine d’albums du mythique label Blue Note. Bien que ces premiers enregistrements soient empreints d’une forte influence hard bop, son jeu embrasse non seulement le be-bop, le R&B ou le latin, mais aussi l’Avant-garde jazz. Ses participations incluent le quintette d’Horace Silver jusqu’en 1964 — on lui doit un solo sur Song for My Father, le fameux tube du pianiste —, l’album Prisoner de Herbie Hancock ou l’avant-gardiste Black Fire de Andrew Hill.

Joe Henderson décède le 30 juin 2001 à 64 ans d'une insuffisance cardiaque après une longue lutte avec un emphysème[1].
