John Grierson

John Grierson

John Grierson (1898 - 1972) est un cinéaste britannique qui avait une idée très élevée de ce qu'était la fonction du cinéma dans la société moderne. Après un début de carrière remarqué au Royaume-Uni, il met en place en 1939 les destinées de l'Office national du film du Canada, qu'il suivra pendant la guerre. On lui doit notamment la présence de Norman McLaren à l'ONF.

Sa vision du cinéma

Pour Grierson, le cinéma ne doit pas être vu comme un art. Il s'agit avant tout d'un moyen de communication et d'un outil sociologique qui permet de faire comprendre la complexité du monde moderne.

Il dénonce donc la cinéphilie en mettant l'emphase sur ce qu'il croit être le but du cinéma: informer, éduquer, mettre en valeur la condition humaine. Le cinéma ne doit pas être au service de l'art, mais plutôt au service de l'économie, du politique, de l'idéologie et de la morale.

Ses films sont influencés par le style de Eisenstein et les thèmes de Flaherty.
