John Philip Kemble

John Philip Kemble (1757-1823) est un acteur britannique.

Biographie

Né à Prescot dans le Lancastre, il était le fils du directeur du théâtre de Worcester. Il débuta en 1782 sur le théâtre de Dublin, puis vint à Londres en 1783 sur le théâtre de Drury Lane, dont il prit lui-même la direction en 1788. Il quitta la scène en 1817.

Il eut un succès prodigieux dans la tragédie : Hamlet était son triomphe. Il a arrangé pour la scène plusieurs anciennes pièces, et a laissé lui-même quelques ouvrages dramatiques.

Il était frère de la célèbre tragédienne Sarah Siddons (1755–1831), des acteurs Charles Kemble (1775-1854), Stephen Kemble (1758-1822), Elizabeth Whitlock (1761-1836) et de la romancière Ann Hatton (1764–1838). Le fils de Charles, John Mitchell Kemble (1807-1857), s'est distingué par ses recherches sur les origines de la langue anglaise, dont First History of English Language, Londres, 1834, et une édition du poème anglo-saxon Beowulf (1837).
