John Ramsay McCulloch

John Ramsay McCulloch (né le 1er mars 1789 - mort le 11 novembre 1864) était un économiste écossais.

Selon Fr. Mahieu, une véritable histoire de la pensée économique n'apparaît qu'à la fin du XVIIIe siècle avec les premiers essais de G. A Will en Allemagne, Dupont de Nemours, Morelle], Ganilh, en France, [Blugjenski en Russie. Le premier traité où se développe une périodisation effective est celui de McCulloch (1824) : cinq époques de la "Pensée Économique" y sont distinguées après l'époque préliminaire de la pensée antique. Celles-ci sont consacrées successivement aux mercantilistes, aux physiocrates, à Hume et Smith, aux continuateurs (Malthus, Ricardo, Storch, etc.) et aux réformateurs sociaux (Saint-Simon). Cependant, l'histoire de la pensée économique, une fois créée, procédera à des subdivisions nombreuses et complexes (telles les subdivisions de Luigi Cossa). 0n ne fera que reprendre les classements antérieurement opérés par l'économie politique. Sous l'impulsion de son disciple passionné, J.-R. McCulloch, qui dirigea la première édition de ses œuvres complètes (1846), David Ricardo, suivant la célèbre formule de Keynes, « conquit l'Angleterre aussi complètement que la Sainte-Alliance conquit l'Espagne » : Les multiples commentaires reçus après la première édition de ses principes, notamment avec Malthus, Say, Mill et McCulloch poussent Ricardo à clarifier sa pensée dans la troisième édition de 1821, qui est désormais 'la' référence.
