Kabi

La nation Kabi (ou Kabi Kabi) sont des aborigènes du peuple Murri. Ils correspondent au groupe linguistique de la côte du sud-est du Queensland, qui s'étend de Brisbane à Gladstone. Dans leur langue, "Kabi" signifie "non".

Le plus petit des clans s'est récemment scindé en plusieurs sous-groupes, et ne veulent plus être identifiés en tant que Kabi. Ainsi, le terme Kabi ne fait désormais référence qu'à un petit groupe au sein d'un plus grand sous-groupe. Les Kabi étaient auparavant considéré comme le groupe anthropologique le plus important de la région SEQ.

Le Buroinjin était un jeu du peuple Kabi. Les spectateurs criaient 'Ei, ei' pour applaudir. C'était également le nom de la balle confectionnée à partir de peau de kangourou.

Le dieu ancestral des Kabi s'appelle Dhakan ("l'arc-en-ciel") et était un esprit en partie poisson qui vivait dans les trous d'eau profonds.

Steve Renouf, le joueur de rugby des Broncos de Brisbane, descend du peuple Kabi par son père. Artie Beetson, la légende de la ligue de rugby du Queensland et l'ancien capitaine de l'équipe d'Australie, est également un descendant Kabi.

Joel Wenitong, du groupe de hip-hop "Deadly Knowledge", appartient à la nation Kabi.

Ray Minniecon, du peuple Kabi, est le directeur des ministères aborigène de la croisée des chemins (en anglais, Crossroads Aboriginal Ministries) dans le diocèse anglican de Redfern. Il aida au financement de la Kinchela Boys' Home Aboriginal Corporation et de programmes sociaux pour les aborigènes.
