Kapurthala (panjâbî : ਕਪੂਰਥਲਾ, hindi : कपूरथला) est la capitale du district de Kapurthala (Doabi:ਕਪੂਰਥਲਾ ਜ਼ਿਲਾ) dans l'État du Penjab, dans le nord-ouest de l'Inde.

Histoire de la ville

Kapurthala, est la capitale de l'ancienne principauté de Kapurthala, dont les souverains portèrent le titre de "Sardar" puis de "Râja" et enfin de "Maharaja". La ville aurait été fondé au XIe siècle, par Rana Kapur, de la famille régnante Rajput de Jaisalmer. En 1780, le Sardar Jassa Singh a pris la ville et ses dépendances des chefs musulmans à l'effondrement de l'Empire moghol, et en a fait la capitale du Kapurthala. Elle a été constituée en municipalité en 1896, le maharajah Jagajit Singh a fait construire le palais de Jagatjit. On comptait 18,519 habitants en 1901 selon l'administration britannique[1].

Le style architectural de la ville, mélange d'influences française et moghole lui valent le surnom de « Paris des Indes ». Un palais de style français y fut construit de 1900 à 1908 par l'architecte Alexandre Marcel. Ce palais nommé "l'Elysée", par le maharajah francophile Jagajit Singh. Il voulait y retrouver sa fascination pour l'art et la culture française, il fit aussi construire son palais d'Agrat et ses jardins sur le modèle de Versailles[2]. Ce palais fut la résidence de la cinquième épouse du Maharajah, l'espagnole Anita Delgado Briones.

On y voit actuellement de nombreuses mosquées, et temples, de nombreux jardins comme le Shalimar Bagh et de gurdwaras, lieu saint des sikhs.

Pushpa Gujral Science City

En 2005, inauguration de la première phase du Pushpa Gujral Science City seconde "ville des sciences" en Inde, et fierté du Penjab, nommée ainsi en hommage au premier ministre Shri I.K. Gujral[3].

En 1930, la principauté du Kapurthala devient une partie du Punjab States Agency britannique, avant de rejoindre l'Union indienne en 1950 comme membre du PEPSU organisé en huit districts. Le Patiala et l'Union des États du Penjab Oriental (PEPSU) devient un état de la République de l'Inde en 1950 et fusionne avec l’État du Penjab en 1956.
