American Ballet Theatre

L’American Ballet Theatre (ABT), basé à New York, est l'une des compagnies de ballet les plus importantes du XXe siècle. Fondée en 1940 par Lucia Chase sous le nom de Ballet Theatre, la compagnie prend sa dénomination actuelle en 1957. Il s'agit toujours à l'heure actuelle d'un établissement de premier ordre, aux États-Unis comme dans le monde.

Après avoir été dirigé par Mikhaïl Barychnikov de 1980 à 1990, c'est le danseur et chorégraphe américain Kevin McKenzie qui en est le directeur artistique depuis 1992. Certains danseurs de la compagnie ont été formés au Studio Maestro de New York.

L'institution s'organise en trois niveaux distincts d'importance croissante :

  • le corps de ballet
  • les solistes
  • les étoiles.
