American Colonization Society

L'American Colonization Society fut une société philantropique américaine fondée en 1816.

Son intention était d'aider les esclaves américains victimes de la traite transatlantique à revenir sur leur continent d'origine. Elle acheta en 1821 des terres à l'embouchure du fleuve Saint-Paul, là où le Libéria vit plus tard le jour. La Société contrôla étroitement le développement du Libéria jusqu'en 1847, où le Libéria se déclara indépendant. En 1867, elle avait organisé le retour de plus de 13 000 esclaves[1].
