Le genre Polypodium regroupe des fougères possédant un rhizome horizontal.Cette tige horizontale permet l'alimentation du polypode.

La partie supérieure de cette plante est appelée la fronde, la nervure principale constitue quant à elle le rachis. Les espèces de Polypodium sont généralement terrestres mais occasionnellement elles peuvent être épiphytes. Elles font partie des rares espèces épiphytes rencontrées en France.

Il était sous forme concassée le premier constituant du catholicum simple et du diaprun solutif (racines de polypode de chêne) de la pharmacopée maritime occidentale au XVIIIe siècle [1].
