Liste des présidents d'Israël

Le président de l'État d'Israël est le chef de l'État. Il a essentiellement une fonction protocolaire. Le président actuel est Shimon Peres.

Élection du président

Un vote à la majorité absolue (61 voix) de la Knesset désigne directement le nouveau président. Si aucun candidat ne sort après les trois premiers tours de vote, une majorité simple suffit.

Il est élu pour une durée de sept ans et ne peut pas être réélu (avant une récente réforme, le mandat présidentiel était de 5 ans et pouvait être renouvelé une fois). Tout citoyen israélien qui réside en Israël peut être éligible.

Le terme du mandat présidentiel peut être provoqué par la démission du président ou par une décision prise par les trois quarts des parlementaires de la Knesset pour le destituer pour sa conduite ou pour incapacité à conduire le mandat. Il n'y a pas de vice-président et la fonction de chef de l'État revient au président de la Knesset en cas d'incapacité temporaire du président.

* Chaim Weizmann et Yitzhak Ben-Zvi sont décédés durant leur mandat. Ezer Weizman et Moshe Katsav durent démissionner de leur poste.
